The height of a child, you rise from earth,
head a tousled mop of green,
hands bursting with stars;
girl and her brother, umbrella
or parasol, you’re my kind of angel,
no trumpets or frills,
stems dreaming of candy-floss,
ice-cream, summer pleasures stored
against the leafless dark
you travel home to each year
so your silver twin can embellish
the tree of heaven
I’ll bring indoors
and string with galaxies,
your hundreds and thousands of seeds.

Around the Purple Sage
we women gather
aromatic leaves
hot in the sun.
We speak with respect
shared compassion
of lack of care
for the old.
Alone in hospital beds
lost in memories
looking back
never forward
left to sit and fade
and die.
Around the Purple Sage
we women gather
our strength
binds us.
We each have tales to share
mothers and fathers
aunts and uncles
the sad neglect.
May they feel loved by us
touched with kindness
held in our tender embrace
lips gently moistened
fed tiny morsels
of temptation.
Around the Purple Sage
we women gather
aromatic leaves
hot in the sun.
