Botanicals Rooted in Science. Plants are used to help protect against infection, like thyme and sage in Europe and echinacea root in North America. Plants make antiviral and antibacterial chemicals to help protect themselves in their environment. It’s these same ingredients that may help us fight infection too. Protect Tea contains 6 aromatic foodstuffs plants which have laboratory research to show they kill certain bacteria and viruses and have no human studies yet, though there are human studies on most of them for other medicinal benefits. Common ivy leaf (not the berry which is poisonous!) is shown safe and effective to treat a range of respiratory disorders in over 2 years olds and is added to cough medicines in Europe – ivy leaf is an expectorant, as well as being anti-viral.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT AROMATIC PLANTS? They have a key role to play in boosting immunity due to their essential oils, which are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Bay (Laurus nobilis) has been shown to have against SARS corona virus. Essential oils have also been shown to promote secretion of mucus, relieve spasm and cough, be anti-histamine, as well lower oxidation and inflammation, such decreasing the pro-inflammatory cytokine response. These processes can help reduce the swelling and edema associated with respiratory infections and so reduce symptoms like wheezing, congestion and difficulty breathing. It is safe to use essential oils in steam inhalations as long as you do not have a medical condition such as epilepsy.
DID YOU KNOW? While you can take, for example, a cup of Protect Tea to help fight against infection, to treat a condition with a plant medicine it is important to take the correct dose and plant medicine for your individual needs – and in that case always first consult a NIMH medical herbalist and inform your healthcare provider before giving to a child, if you are pregnant, have any medical condition or are taking any medication.
