Botanicals Rooted in Science. There are plants used in plant medicine to help protect against and treat infection, like thyme, oregano and sage in Europe and echinacea root in North America. Plants make antiviral and antibacterial chemicals to help protect themselves in their environment. These same ingredients can help us fight infection too. Respiratory Tea contains 6 medicinal plants which have research to show they are effective against certain bacteria and viruses – though there are no studies on these aromatic plants to show these effects in humans yet, there are human studies on these plants for other medicinal benefits.
Common Ivy Leaf (not the flower or berry) is shown safe and effective to treat a range of respiratory disorders – in over 2 years olds – and is added to cough medicines in Europe and approved by European Medicines Agency for use as a cough medicine – ivy leaf is an expectorant, as well as being anti-viral. WHAT IS IT ABOUT AROMATIC PLANTS LIKE SAGE? The volatile aromatic constituents of plants like Europen sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano have been shown to be anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral (they help protect the plant in their environment). The volatile constituents (present in the essential oils) from these plants, have also been shown to promote secretion of mucus, relieve spasm and cough, be anti-histamine, as well lower oxidation and inflammation, such as decreasing the pro-inflammatory cytokine response. These processes can help reduce the swelling and edema associated with respiratory infections and so reduce symptoms like wheezing, congestion and difficulty breathing. It is safe to use these essential oils in steam inhalations as long as you do not have a medical condition such as epilepsy. Bay (Laurus nobilis) has been shown to have against a SARS corona virus.
DID YOU KNOW? You can take a cup of Respiratory Tea to help fight against infection. But to treat a condition, and for the most effective results, it is important to take the correct plant medicine/s and dose for your individual needs and whole condition. Always first consult a NIMH medical herbalist and inform your healthcare provider before giving to a child, if you are pregnant, have any medical condition or are taking any medication.
