Heritage and Science
Throughout history, people have turned to the medicinal plants around them to find relief from sleep disturbances and insomnia.
Medicinal plants such as valerian, hop, chamomile, lavender, melissa, ashwagandha, sour cherry, jujube, and passionflower have been subject to rigorous laboratory investigations that show the complex mechanisms through which they enhance sleep. These mechanisms include increasing melatonin levels and our brain’s sleep-inducing signal, adenosine.
For select plant medicines like valerian, hops, chamomile, melissa, and sour cherry, gold standard controlled clinical trials reveal that, when administered at a medicinal dose, these plants enhance the onset, quality and duration of sleep, as well as daytime functioning, when compared to placebos, and in some compared to conventional pharmaceuticals show equal effectiveness and do not have the unwanted side effects such as addiction and daytime sedation.
Did you know?
While you can take this tea before sleep to help improve the onset, duration and quality of sleep, to treat a condition with medicinal plants, you need to reach a medicinal dose.
A medicinal dose of tea for adults is the equivalent of 2 teabags steeped for 20 minutes and taken 3x daily.
In addition, for effective treatment with plant medicine it is also important to take a prescription that is relevant to the individual and their holistic needs, taking into account all conditions and any other medication, and also monitoring the individual response, for which we recommend consulting a NIMH medical herbalist.
Caution
When taking any medicinal plant at a medicinal level, always first consult a NIMH medical herbalist or healthcare professional before giving to a child, if you are pregnant, have any medical condition or allergy, or if you are taking any medication. Do not stop taking any medication you have been prescribed without consulting your health care professional.
