Modern perfumery traces its lineage back through centuries to humble, fragrant beginnings – the burning of resinous incense, the strewing of herbs underfoot, a splash of floral water on the skin, or the gentle waft from a pomander ball.
Since antiquity, plants have been treasured in many forms: to perfume the air, dispel malodours, anoint and cleanse the body, enhance beauty, and awaken the senses. Set within the idyllic setting of Dilston Physic Garden, this immersive one-day workshop invites you to explore the origins of perfumery and the enduring relationship between aromatic plants and the human imagination.
Enjoy a hands-on, interactive day embracing the theory and creative art of botanical perfumery – you’ll:
- Discover the origins and history of perfume from Cleopatra to Chanel
- Understand perfume vocabulary – the art of smelling and training the nose
- Get to know perfume structure – Top, Middle, Base notes
- Explore fragrance classifications
- Learn secrets of blending & dilutions
- Know safety and storage
Drawing inspiration from the beauty of Dilston Physic Gardens and a palette of pure grade essential oils and absolutes, you’ll learn about key ingredients in perfume creation and how to combine them. With lots of sampling and discussion, you’ll be guided on basic perfumery composition and blending, to create your own alcohol-based natural perfume spray to take home. I look forward to welcoming you!
