Corbridge developed around a Roman fort and supply town on Dere Street, and its Roman Town and museum remain among the best-preserved Roman sites in the north of England. Our garden sits just outside Corbridge on the banks of a river Tyne tributary, and we’ve drawn on this heritage to create a tea that connects the garden’s scientific approach to our heritage and history – with the plants the Romans would have known and used.
ROMAN TEA is blended from twelve botanicals, and each ingredient has been selected for a specific, evidence-based role – aromatic respiratory herbs, digestive spices, and plants researched for their fortifying, metabolic and calming properties.
Thyme herb, dill seed, black pepper fruit and fenugreek seed give aromatic, warming notes that are traditionally and scientifically associated with respiratory and digestive support. Nettle leaf, nettle seed, plantain major leaf and milk thistle seed bring the fortifying, metabolic properties at the heart of the blend, while the rose bud, roman chamomile flower, lavender herb and mugwort herb round out the cup with their calming, unwinding properties.
“ROMAN TEA is a way of drinking Northumberland’s roman history. This is a place where Roman soldiers and traders once relied on plants for their health (as we all did!), and where many of those same plants still grow in our garden today. We wanted a tea that felt authentically rooted in this landscape and in the science behind why these medicinal plants work.” Dr Nicolette Perry, Dilston Physic Garden
