Marie Addyman has been reading and teaching literature and how it uses nature to express our deepest emotions for many years. Her book, Nature: An English Literary Heritage explores these ideas in detail. Come and share some of the insights and emotions of both famous and lesser-known poets. Plants, birds and the natural world have always inspired writers from anonymous medieval lyricists to our contemporary poets. Two different sessions whet our curiosity by exploring some of the themes, emotions and problems of our involvement in the natural world.
Session 1: Saturday 15th March, 2025, 11.00am – 1.00pm
‘Amorous green’
From the Middle Ages to the present, poets have called upon nature to express love, desire and amorous frustration. They’ve also expressed grief, loneliness and loss, as well as joy, gratitude and contentment by invoking the passing of time and seasonal changes.
Session 2: Saturday 23rd August, 2025, 2.00-4.00pm
In this session we learn from our creative writers what effects our attitudes to and treatment of the natural world has had on nature.
