Go away from this short expert talk with a refreshingly new appreciation of our invaluable plant medicine heritage.
Herbals have been an integral part of European literature for over 2,000 years. These fascinating documents provide a window into the historical understanding of plants and their uses. The first English herbal to offer meticulous descriptions of plants and a comprehensive record of their medicinal properties was compiled by the renowned Northumbrian physician William Turner, who authored a three-part herbal between 1551 and 1568.
In this 1.5-hour workshop, led by a recognised authority on William Turner’s medical and natural history writings, participants will delve into extracts from Turner’s ground-breaking work among others within the DPG and Marie’s selection. Through this exploration, we will uncover how Turner’s herbal differed from earlier texts, what innovative approaches he introduced, and the type of valuable information his writings contain.
